Absalom Jones Courtyard

Since its opening in 2023, the Absalom Jones Courtyard has become a significant place on campus, providing a venue for key events as well as a spot for studying, connection, and sunshine and fresh air.

Dozens of events have been held in the space, including over 14 bookings since the space became officially available in the College’s reservation system in 2024. Event highlights have included the annual spring alumni receptions with the graduating class, faculty and staff celebrations, a meet and greet with the new president, and a reception celebrating the new Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania and Absalom Jones Foundation Scholarship, which was particularly serendipitous because of the connection with the space’s name.

The space was named to honor a remarkable Philadelphian — an abolitionist, an educator, the first Black Episcopal priest, and a tireless advocate for justice. Absalom Jones believed in the transformative power of education and community. Through the events and fellowship that have happened in the space over the past two years and the people that have connected within the walls and fresh air, we see his spirit is very much alive.

The courtyard is one of my favorite places on campus to take a break. It is a calm, welcoming space where I can have lunch, read, recharge, and enjoy being outdoors while still feeling connected to campus life. It is very nice to have such a peaceful space in a busy city college.

“[Along with] events, the space serves as a study space, gathering space, independent meeting space between faculty and students, and a student lunch area on a daily basis. The students really enjoy this space as an offshoot lounging area of the library. I think it is a testament to the space’s serene, calm and peaceful atmosphere.”
