Basic Needs/Emergency Funding

Across the country, many community college students juggle family, work, and their studies, and more than half are food or housing insecure. Although food insecurity is one of the biggest issues, many other needs are critical to student success, such as funding for childcare and transportation. In fact, students experiencing resource inequality often have multiple needs. Lack of basic needs has far-reaching effects that negatively impact student performance. These obstacles can prevent students from completing their coursework, preventing them from achieving their dreams of a career, earning a living wage, supporting their families and contributing to their communities.

Generous support for basic needs has helped the College provide students with emergency funding for food, housing and rent costs, utilities, transportation, childcare, and other urgent financial needs. Support for basic student needs helps break down the barriers that exist in obtaining a college degree and helps end the cycle of poverty for Community College of Philadelphia students and their families.

Single Stop

Established in 2013, this one-stop shop provides students with free and comprehensive social services and financial resources. Single Stop has helped students manage and overcome life and economic barriers so they can continue their education and move towards economic mobility.

Since its inception, Single Stop has served more than 19,000 students and their families, connecting them to more than $30.6 million in financial resources. Students who utilized Single Stop demonstrated a course success rate of 95.6%, compared to the college-wide success rate of 88.9%, in addition to higher graduation and persistent rates and higher grade point averages.

KEYS

Keystone Education Yields Success (KEYS) helps students with financial need complete their college education. We assist students who receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) support. Students enrolled in the program have the opportunity to meet regularly with program staff who will help them meet their educational goals.

Students are connected with appropriate support services both in and outside the College. Academic performance is monitored, and students are referred to needed services such as tutoring, advising, and career and personal counseling. In addition, KEYS can assist students in accessing benefits and services through the County Assistance Office and other community agencies.

Learning Lab

The Learning Lab Department offers free academic support services to Community College of Philadelphia students. Faculty specialists and tutors with expertise in a broad range of subject areas are available to provide students with a personalized learning experience. All of the Learning Lab Department's services are designed to help students achieve success throughout their college careers.

Women’s Outreach and Advocacy Center

The Women’s Outreach and Advocacy Center provides services that address the academic, social, emotional and personal development needs, as well as the health and safety concerns, of female students. Its co-curricular educational, professional, cultural, and social services and programs empower women students to take responsibility for and control of their own life choices. The Center also enables women to convene as a community for advocacy, collaboration, research and education.
